What is Arc Resistance?

Arc Resistance is the arc resistance specification established by ASTM D495.

The ability of plastic materials to resist deterioration caused by the action of a high-voltage arc is usually expressed by the time required for the standard arc flame to cause carbonization on the surface of the material until the surface conducts electricity and the arc disappears. Arc resistance is measured in seconds.

The anti-arc characteristic can usually be measured by the time of short circuit when arc current is generated between electrodes, which is one of the important basis for evaluating insulating container materials such as circuit breakers and fuses.
